ateez weibo fandom observation/primer
Jul. 24th, 2023 08:27 pmdisclaimer: last observed in early october 2022 so things may have changed since then
ateez is the lest known member of 五代六小头 (lit: 5th gen 6 small heads). a douban yunho fan who published a thesis in late 2021/early 2022 analysing the growth and predicting the future of 6 boygroups: ateez, enhypen, stray kids, the boyz, treasure, txt. the fan called them '六巨头‘ (lit: 6 huge heads), the 6 magnates. as most non 4th gen boygroup fans questioned the popularity of 4th gen boygroups due to the lack of domestic achievements, the term '6 small heads was used to describe these boygroups instead' and the term was carried over to weibo.
I personally see the Chinese fandom as a much more flop version of Caratdom so there are less to talk about and it’s a lot more straightforward. Ateez is probably the group that has highest proportion of ‘group fans’ among all 4th gen boygroups. The proportion of group fans is higher than Seventeen. This can be due to KQ heavily promoting the ‘8 makes one team’ agenda, and the small size of the fandom means that there are less fights. Unlike svt fans who like to single out a weak spot in performing (wonwoo is usually the target), atz fans tend to praise the group as a whole. Due to the relatively huge amount of international fans, there is a huge overlap in fandom culture, which makes it stand out among most kpop fandoms.
Most of their group fans aren’t the type to use a lot of dry humour and tend not to make jabs at the members. The 厕 (toilet) culture is non-existent. I think it’s because of how the members are usually derided by non-fans for their appearances and performance style. As such, fans tend not to make jokes that may seem offensive to other fans and some non-fans have commented that the fandom is boring.
toilet culture originates from “xx隔空吐槽bot”, where users can submit their opinions about something anonymously, because the quality of those submissions vary, these accounts are called toilets where users can take a shit at.
- ateez does not have a designated account for that so ateez fans tend to make a lot of submissions to account for 4th gen boygroups. since it's not an account dedicated to a specific group, the submissions tend to be fans hyping up the members or pairings.
sidenote: 惨 (miserable, awful) 圈 fans tend to like enhypen because of the sheer amount of controversies they have
As a result, their fans are unwilling to have any form of discussion regarding the members’ individual popularity in China. Due to the small size of the fandom, most fans tend to use their popularity among overseas fans as a frame of reference instead. Based on my observation, hj and sn tends to be the most popular members, but wy’s popularity has caught up after kingdom. Most of big fan accounts are either from Hong Kong or from Taiwan. A good chunk of fans on Weibo are also from Hong Kong and Taiwan, which means that mainland Chinese fans are almost non-existent.
Solo stans
Solo fans rarely fight, but fights happen over the official designation of the members’ positions. I’ve never really seen their solo stans fight over opportunities/ resources too . Most of them are offhanded comments that never really evolved into fights. Sometimes I can’t tell if the solo fans are just praising the members or they’re making a jab at the others.
- I remember seeing fans of more popular members getting mad at Jongho getting the bulk of the lines even though he’s one of the least popular members.
Shipping
like caratdom, in atz ficdom, no single member gets left out in fics by assigning (often fixed) pairs. to counteract that, fans also engage with ‘战略性磕cp‘, which means ‘strategic shipping’. Fans who engage in that tend not to ship the most popular pairing or the most heavily marketed pairing.
wy/sn is definitely the most popular pairing in atz no matter the region. a chinese atz fan once remarked that if you’re a solo stan of both you’ll probably hate that wy and sn are ‘tied’ with each other. hj and sh fans tend not to ship hj/sh two of them because the pairing gets characterised as the ‘mum and dad’ pairing (the more flop version of jeongcheol but hj is the bottom). both hj and wy fans are quite accepting of the hj/wy pairing and hj is more willing to do fanservice with wy LOL…sh and sn fans tend to ship sn/sh more (this is the same as their kr fans). sh fans like yh/sh too
